Derby day in Dar Es Salaam
I was lucky enough to attend a derby match between Tanzania's two football powerhouses, Simba FC, and Young Africans FC, or Yanga for short. Both teams' clubhouses are a few blocks away from each other in Dar es Saalam, and the whole city shuts down on derby day. The match is high drama, with smack-talking and bravado abounding as fans rush past each other into the National Stadium. Spectators regularly feint during the match and have to be carted off by medics. Ultimately though, there is never any violence or hooliganism, providing a nice contrast to other great rivalries in the world of sport. Simba FC won bragging rights that day.
